Vista pruning
The objective of vista pruning is to provide attractive views from the main rooms on the first floor of a house while maintaining a filtered view of the home from marshes, ponds, trails or the golf course. Pruning in the buffer area should leave vegetation of varying heights and types (trees, shrubs, aquatic plants) so a hedge-like appearance is not created.
River and marsh views
Marshes are delicate wetland habitats that must be protected from runoff by maintaining a thick vegetative buffer. Beaufort County law requires protection of a 50′ buffer and regulations are enforced with fines. Pruning for view vistas in the buffer area should leave vegetation of varying heights and lawns should not be located within 50′ of a marsh or river edge.
Pond vistas
Pruning to achieve views to a pond must be done with wildlife and pond edge erosion in mind. It’s a good idea to maintain a variety of vegetation types and heights along a pond edge. Maintaining taller vegetation along pond edges also discourages alligators from basking in those spots.
